It was always my intention to keep this blog politics free but I couldn’t let the day pass without a comment on the Carbon Tax protest in Canberra yesterday. I don’t know who organised it but it was a squalid, nasty little show indeed!
I won’t repeat some of the stuff that was written on banners and placards but suffice to say it was enough to make a feminist weep! They must have scoured the RSL clubs of south western NSW and bussed them into Canberra. It certainly lowered the IQ of the city for the day.
The worst part of all is not that “crazy” Barnaby Joyce ranted like a madman(which I think he probably is!) or that Abbott was silly enough to stand in front of one of these banners for a national audience to see and talk his usual dribble, but that Bronwyn Bishop, a politician of some standing and Sophie Mirabella, a politician of less standing and not much conviction had themselves photographed in front of these signs.
Now I must admit I am a Labor voter but Sophie Mirabella annoys me like a tick annoys a dog. She is the MHR down in Wangaratta where I was born and I find the woman a total embarrassment and a disgrace to those fine people in North East Victoria. A blow in from Melbourne she has had nothing to contribute to national debate but bile. I am more disappointed in Bronwyn Bishop because I thought she had a bit more class than that.
I guess the thing that annoys me the most is the lack of respect for the office of Prime Minister. You may not like Julia Gillard or the policies she pursues but you don’t have to, just respect the position she holds.
The Labor Party is hardly blameless in the lowering of the tone of national debate but it is fairly clear that Tony Abbott and his advisers are the ones pursuing grubby attacks more than the other side. I hope the Liberal Party sees sense before the next election and move him along because he may well just end up being Prime Minister if they don’t! Does anyone really want that?
On a more important note I would just like to acknowledge the passing of Elizabeth Taylor overnight, aged 79. An actress of exquisite beauty who captivated the world for much of her life with her 8 marriages, numerous affairs, and ability to keep the gossip columns full. She and Richard Burton fitted each other like a glove but their personalities and egos were too big for the one relationship but they made a hell of a couple!
Oh yeah, and go watch one of her better movies if you have the time, it’s easy to forget that she was one hell of an actress too!
