Friday again. The week has rolled around reasonably quickly. Pretty much a normal week for me except for Granville’s funeral on Wednesday. It was a bit of a long winded affair with multiple eulogies by grandchildren, sons and my 2 sisters! Granville would have been looking at his watch thinking that it was time to go home long before it ended. It was quite a large funeral for a man of 95. I figured when you get to that age most of your friends have already passed on but it was well attended.
Work is the same. Going to pieces it seems. Australia Post seems to have degenerated into a second rate public service department, not a national corporation looking to expand it’s horizons. I thought when the new General Manager was installed just over a year ago that things might have improved but realistically it has gotten worse. Ahmed Fahour ran the Australian arm of the National Australia Bank for a number of years and we expected big things from him but unfortunately, so far we have been disappointed.
It does appear that he has been put in charge to open up new business horizons for AP to compensate for the dwindling mail flow but he has left the mail delivery part of the business with the same old slovenly crew who seem to have been running it down for years. I would say that if we don’t increase profits within the next couple or years Mr Fahour will really take the knife to the business and I doubt that will be pretty!
I think at the end of the day the Federal Government doesn’t want the burden of a failing mail system thrown onto them so I can see Australia Post getting into a number of new ventures. They have promised that existing staff are part of the plan and training will be available to anyone who wants to forge ahead with the company. Not sure if an old dinosaur like me fits into that but we will see.
I’ve had a bit of a hectic morning. At least more hectic than usual. Linda needed her blood pressure tablets so after dropping Monique off I battled my way through the traffic into the city and after a nice brisk walk arrived at the Department of Infrastructure. Delivered the tablets, a nice quick cup of coffee with Linda and back home.
As I was driving home along Lady Denman Drive the thought occurred to me of how lucky we are to live in Canberra. I know this city is an easy target and has it’s faults but really it’s quite easy to live here. The traffic snarl from Queanbeyan into Canberra took me about 20 minutes to get through-wouldn’t they love that in Melbourne and Sydney and it was quite easy to get a park on the outskirts of the city centre and a 10 minute walk to where I need to go.
The natural beauty of the town for some reason has taken my fancy lately. I suppose when it’s a beautiful autumn day like today and the trees are starting to lose their leaves it’s easy to get a bit gooey. But I have really been enjoying the views out towards Weston Creek and the hills beyond as I drive out of the Tuggeranong Valley on my way to work every day and as we have had so much rain everything is nice and green. I would be happy to bring any foreign tourist here and show them the sights as Canberra at it’s best can stand up with most places that I’ve been. When the new Arboretum is operational and blooming I think it will make it even better.
Anyway, onwards and upwards. Last day of the week and I have pointed the nose towards Saturday. Hope everyone has a great weekend.
