Observations of a weekend. Monday, May 2 2011

Boy, how irrelevant have the Logie awards become? I can remember back years ago when they were compulsory viewing and quite enjoyable but now they seem to be all celebrity shallowness and forced jokes. I can remember real personalities like Bert Newton winning the Gold Logie. Now they are just lame!
This notion is only reinforced to me when a a nobody like Karl Stefanovic can take home the big prize for most popular personality on Australian TV. Karl is a very annoying, opinionated, self aggrandizing morning television show host but I wonder how many people in the street would actually be able to recognize him?
I suppose it could be worse. Kochie from Sunrise could have won it! I bet Channel 7 are annoyed. They have repeatedly beaten Karl Stefanovic’s morning show with their own version, Sunrise for a number of years yet Karl gets the Gold Logie. Haha. I suppose Channel Nine does host the awards and I found out today that the media group that owns Nine also owns the TV Week magazine who compile the votes! Hmmmm.
I did glance at the telecast and the short glimpse of the forced comedy of the host Shane Bourne quickly convinced me that the Logies would not be compulsory viewing. I watched the end of Castle instead.
Obviously and quite rightly the television industry deserves a night to hand out awards and congratulate people who have achieved excellence and dare I say popularity through the year past but I can’t help thinking that it is really an excuse for a booze up and has lost it’s way. It needs a revamp but I won’t hold my breath.

Of course the other great media event of the weekend was the Royal wedding. I must say it was quite a spectacle and even the hearts of the most ardent Republicans must have been tweaked a little. I don’t mind a bit of pomp and ceremony but only managed to see a bit of it.
The British Royal family are certainly a resilient lot. I don’t suppose the institution would have lasted 1000 years if they weren’t. Like any institution they have had their ups and down and their popularity has ebbed and flowed through the centuries. They seemed to have reinvented themselves yet again and Prince William may have just set them up for another 50 years with his affable and charming personality. I think he and his wife will be very popular for a long time.
Personally I think the idea of a hereditary Monarchy can seem a bit incongruous in the early 21st century but having a Monarch free of political influence and persuasion is an advantage over any Republican system that I see proposed. I am afraid most Republics leave me cold. In any case I think they are going to last a long long time in Britain yet and the Australian Republican cause may have a way to go before they can achieve their dream. We shall wait and see.

I was out early yesterday for breakfast at a friends house in Queanbeyan. They are very nice people and I had a nice time. Unfortunately Linda had doubled booked us and we had to leave quite abruptly to make it to another engagement at the Brasserie at Yarralumla Nursery. Boy, I wish I had stayed in Queanbeyan! Some of the people at this engagement were the most boorish types that you can imagine in such a place. Now the waiters did make a few mistakes but these people were just downright rude. It was really embarrassing. If I had had my way I would have got up and left.
That being said I found the meal delicious and the service okay. I would definitely recommend the place but I won’t be going back there or anywhere else with these particular people.

Now it’s nearly time to have lunch and prepare for work which I am not looking forward to. Our regular supervisor is off for the week and has been replaced by a fellow from the later shifts who is acting up and whom we don’t have a lot of time for. Should be fun! Also, I am on day shift for two days starting tomorrow which is something I am not looking forward to. It is the pits as far as shifts go but I opened my mouth and said I would do it so I will just have to grin and bare it.
So that is it for now and I will sign off till the next time.
