Got one of those nasty little phone calls that none of us like at work last night. You know what I mean. You see the number come up and you realise that person never rings at that time unless there is something wrong.
It was 8.30pm and it was my mother and she never rings me that late, in fact she barely rings me at all so I was worried before I even answered and the gravity of her voice when I did confirmed it.
My little great niece Isabella who lives in Fiji was ill and in intensive care in hospital in Suva. Now the fact she is in in intensive care was obviously cause enough for alarm but my typical Australian attitude kicked in and the next thought I had was about the standard of care she might be recieving in such a place.
She has been ill recently and had obviously taken a turn for the worse but she responded well to treatment overnight and after speaking to my mother this morning she was apparently a lot better and being a bit cheeky so things are looking up and I must apologize to the Fijian medical staff because they obviously made the right calls.
She is being airlifted to Sydney and is in fact in the air as I write and should arrive around 11am. Sydney Children’s Hospital has a good reputation and I’m sure will get her right again. It’s just sad that a little girl is so sick that she has to go through such a thing. The major worry is that there might be some underlying cause of her illness and we are all hoping that it is nothing more than a bit of a virus or such.
It scared me a little after hearing the news because when you hear “intensive care” obviously you think the worst but it is not always as bad as that. I found myself sitting at work thinking how unfair it was and how I wish I could swap places with her and wondering if God would let me do that! Strange and I’m not even religious, haha. You never know how you are going to react.
Here’s hoping for some good news today.
