Bit of a dull weekend as I came down with a cold so it was all a bit miserable. I seem to have just been holding it off for a couple of weeks but it got me on Friday evening. Was holding my own on Saturday but went out to dinner in Manuka on Saturday night and that did me in. Probably should have been home in bed instead of eating Madras Lamb but I have to keep my social circle intact!
Yesterday I copped it in full. I have been sicker in my life but it was just one of those illnesses that make you feel miserable. After a while your nose gets sore from wiping it and you need to dose yourself up with Panadol and Codral cold tablets.
Feeling a bit better today. Had to take Megan and a friend of hers to a Futsal competition at the Mpowerdome in Fadden before taking Monique to school and they insisted on a breakfast stop at Macca’s. I needed that like a hole in the head but now I am up and about I do feel a little better than yesterday. Nose isn’t dripping and head isn’t so light. Just getting a bit of a cough but I think I will struggle into work.
I don’t feel bad about going in today simply because that is where I would have caught it in the first place! There is always someone getting around sniffling and sick and it’s a surprise that I don’t come down with something more often.
The personal hygiene of many of the people I work with leaves a lot to be desired unfortunately so washing hands etc is very important. I really think Australia Post should invest in some courses on personal hygiene. They are always complaining about the amount of sick leave taken but in a place as cold as Canberra in the winter it is surely inevitable that a number of people will go down with the flu in the winter months.
A personal hygiene course surely wouldn’t hurt and may do some good but I daresay the pennypinchers wouldn’t agree. Years ago they would pay for staff to get the flu vaccine but that fell by the wayside too due to cost. They will still complain about sick leave though I bet!
I have probably been my own worst enemy in regards to not taking enough care of myself at work. Years ago, 1997 to be exact, there was a terrible flu swept through Canberra and I went down with it. Vomiting, diarrhoea, the works. I was off work for eight days which is a record for me and I remember waiting in the doctor’s surgery praying that I wasn’t going to be sick before I got in to see him. I seem to remember the receptionist asking me if I needed a bucket so I couldn’t have been looking too good!
It was July 97 because I can remember Jan Ullrich was on his way to winning his first and only Tour de France and I was lying on the couch at Mum and Dad’s place watching the highlights and being too weak to move too far.
After that I was pedantic about washing my hands at work and being as clean as possible and wearing plenty of clothes when I went outside but my own ethics in that regard may have slipped recently so I will have to make sure I do everything right again. I was lucky this time as it wasn’t so bad but I might not be as lucky next time. Don’t want it to hit again before the winter is out.
It’s funny what you remember. The day Australia won the America’s Cup in 1983 I was as sick as a dog with the works and again I can remember lying on the couch as one of Australia’s greatest sporting moments unfolded. That is if you can call yacht racing a sport!
That was the day the recently elected Bob Hawke was sprayed with champagne, wore a funny jacket and declared that any employer who sacked workers for not turning up to work that day was a bum! Good ‘onya Hawkey!
Former Prime Minister Hawke has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons. He has been knocked over by pneumonia and spent time in hospital and I see today a report where his second wife and his daughter from his first marriage had a brawl in an exclusive executive lounge at Brisbane airport. A fair dinkum scrag fight! Charming.
He is 81 now and looking it. Messiah’s can’t live forever I guess although Gough Whitlam seems to be trying.
So that’s about it for me for today. Nothing really exciting to write about, just my own personal woes. Expecting work to be more of the same but you never know. Something may happen to inspire me. But I doubt it.
