It’s been a week of real winter temperatures in Canberra. A cold front came through at the end of the weekend bringing rain and cold, blustery days. Today the rain has cleared but as I write at 9.59am we still have a pea soup fog outside and it was supposed to get to minus 6 degrees last night. Yes it’s been a real Canberra winter. I saw on the news that the ski resorts are happy as it is the thickest snow cover they have had for 26 years! It won’t worry me. I hate the snow!
Of course the nights have been long ones for me with the Tour de France getting right into it’s swing and despite ideas I had of not watching every night I haven’t been able to help myself and have not switched off the TV until 1.30am or 2.00am every morning!
The racing has been good with Cadel Evans showing himself to be very strong this year and he won the stage that ended on “The Wall of Brittany” so it’s already been a successful race for him and his team come what may in the next 2 weeks.
I’m trying not to get too excited. Cadel looks in great shape but he may struggle on the real steep climbs next week so until we see how he is going on the high cols I will try to keep the excitement in check. He is in a good position as it stands at the moment.
One of the best things for me personally about the coverage is seeing the countryside of France itself. Last night it was a very wet stage through Normandy to the town of Lisieux which is only a short distance from the old Normandy beachheads. The town was destroyed on D-Day, 1944 and 800 residents were killed. So much for liberation! The Allies took the town 2 months later.
Normandy was of course the seat of the old Norman kings of England and it is easy to see why successive English monarchs waged war to try and keep it in their realm.
The race moves out of North Western France tonight with a long, flat transition stage to the foot of the Massif Central mountain range. It won’t be an exciting day but I will probably end up watching most of it.
As for me it has been a quiet week. I am over the cold that laid me low but I haven’t moved outside very much in the cold weather just to make sure I am fully over it.
Monique is in West  Wyalong so that is my destination tomorrow with Linda to pick her up. Won’t be much of an exciting weekend but it will keep me busy. Bye for now.
