Things are slowly getting back to normal after a hectic three weeks of late night cycling watching!
I’ve been feeling pretty tired though and I guess it takes a while for sleep patterns to return to normal and I can’t seem to shake the last vestiges of the bad cold I recently had, my chest still being a little congested causing me to cough severely now and again.
The rainy, windy weather we have been having has been replaced by clears skies which is nice but the overnight temperatures have started to drop again. Minus 6 in Canberra last night! As I drove over to Queanbeyan this morning the temperature gauge on the car was showing minus 1 although on the radio they said it was minus 3 which I suppose is the temperature taken at the airport which I wasn’t actually too far from. It is supposed to warm up to 15 degrees which should make it a nice pleasant day. I should go for a walk or do something constructive but I want to get over this cold completely before doing anything physical. I’m worried that I might go down with the flu again if I don’t get over it properly.
Work is frustrating me this week. I been suffering from a malaise and getting annoyed over little things that I would normally be able to brush off. Dave Paton was telling me he was feeling the same way and joked that it was because Cadel won the Tour and now we all feel a little bit inferior because he’s done something so great and we are still stuck sorting mail! Then again maybe he wasn’t joking. It does sort of resonate with me, haha.
Dave has actually met Cadel Evans. His son Shane started racing mountain bikes on the same day as Cadel and got to know him quite well. Cadel once had lunch at Dave’s house now he is joking that he is going to put a plaque up in his dining room announcing that “Cadel Evans ate here”!
I think I’m just frustrated. The supervisory staff at the mail centre are competent enough but they keep doing things the same way they have been doing them for 20 years and inefficiency is rife. If you try to suggest to them to do something in an improved way they merely look at you like you are a clown employed at a visiting circus.
These feelings ebb and flow with me. This week I’m just bored out of my mind and feel the need to do something more constructive with my life but by next week I will probably be feeling okay again.
So that’s about it for me at the moment. Nothing really exciting happening, just a return to normal after the inspirational and thrilling Australian victory at the Tour.
It’s funny, I never knew there were so many cycling experts around. Everyone seems to have jumped onto the bandwagon. I’ve found myself talking about cycling to Vietnamese and Filipino people. They give their own ideas on what should or could happen and when I try to correct them when they don’t interpret things properly they get that “how would you know” look on their faces. As much as I want to tell them that I have actually turned the pedals in anger and have some idea what I am talking about, I have refrained from doing so and let them enjoy a great moment in Australian sport in their own way. Which is Cadel’s legacy. Bringing bike racing to the unwashed masses.
So I will sign off today and find something else to do. The skies are now clear of fog and hopefully the temperatures are rising and I can make something of what is turning out to be a magnificent morning.
