Our stand in supervisor is totally confused as to how to deploy the 2pm shift staff but luckily he has had a hand as from Tuesday from one of our SMO’s who has occasionally supervised and can at least do the roster for him. Apart from that I have to say he has muddled through without any major problems. It just unsettles people because things are done differently but that says more about how institutionalised we are rather than any poor performance on his part.
Our regular supervisor seems to be the target of abrasiveness and derogatory remarks from the other supervisors and pretenders in the ranks ostensibly because he works too hard!
It is true that he does quite a bit for the mail officers that we should probably do for ourselves but he says he likes to do it and help where he can and I don’t see that as a problem. He gets annoyed because previous shifts leave a mess and he spends much of the first hour at work cleaning up that mess and working himself into a frenzy over it. I have some differences with him over the way he does some things but those differences are small in the scheme of things and I can’t be too critical of a fellow who works his rear end off and tries in his own way to look after his staff.
I was talking to a fellow yesterday who is on light duties, confined to doing handstamp work but who looks like getting one of the new MPC1 positions that will be established shortly. These positions will be directly below the main supervisors in rank and thus will have a fair say in what happens on the floor in the future.
I have been told through the rumour mill that this fellow is a shoe-in for one of these positions and he has no qualms about telling me that our regular supervisor who is a friend of his of long standing, does too much for the mail officers and should not be doing so much work. I believe the supervisor in question has also been told he needs to cut back on his workload. I can’t quote it verbatim but I believe he was told that AP doesn’t pay it’s supervisors to push bins around!
I have had enough of this back biting against our regular supervisor who I have known for the almost quarter of a century and count amongst my friends and I also don’t like the clique that is developing amongst the other supervisors and wannabes so I told our prospective MPC1 that in my opinion it was flabbergasting that anyone in an organisation such as AP could criticise a supervisor for working too hard and that in any other corporation he would be seen as an asset who needed to be looked after not derided.
Does too much work!?! It’s almost too silly to talk about. This is the sort of attitude that Australia Post supervisors had 20 years ago and I well remember them leaning on kingfisher trolleys watching the rest of the staff work whilst they twiddled their thumbs. It’s no wonder Australia Post is going backwards if this is the sort of attitude that prevails amongst those in middle management. And people ask me why I don’t try to improve myself at AP. This sort of attitude is part of the reason.
So our regular supervisor will be back next week and life will be more bearable. He won’t be perfect and I will tell him when I think that is the case but I might also tell him that I think he does a great job and is a worthwhile employee of our organisation because God knows nobody else will!
It started raining yesterday morning and hasn’t stopped. About mid afternoon it got very steady and kept going right up until I knocked off at 9.46pm. It was still pouring as I went bed and I nodded off to the sound of rain pelting down on my pergola and back deck. It was still going strong as I woke up but has eased off now although it is still raining a little.
I expected my garage to be flooded but it has obviously been more steady than heavy and the dogs had a dry night ensconced in their beds out the back. My rain gauge shows 5 inches, the most it has ever been and with more showers seemingly on the way I will be interested to see how full it is tomorrow.
As I write now it has finally stopped completely but I don’t think we have seen the last of it yet.
I think it is time to service the mower serviced as I get the feeling I will need it very soon. Cheers.
