Friday! At last. Always great to get to the end of the week but of course the satisfaction of being here is tempered by the fact that I have to slog it out for another 8 hours this evening before the torture ends and the weekend starts. Of course the two days of the weekend always seem to go exceptionally quickly and you are back at the salt mines again before you know it.
I really am looking forward to the Christmas break. It’s only seven weeks to go and I am counting the days. Work has been a bit overwhelming over the last few weeks and with some other matters playing on my mind I am a bit mentally exhausted.
So yesterday those things I have been mulling over combined with some new frustrating matters and caused me to be a little off centre and not really amenable to regular conversation. It was one of those situations where every little thing seemed to annoy me and I’m sure there were a few people about who were thinking unkindly towards me due to my attitude. So be it. We all have those sorts of days, as long as we don’t make a habit of it most people seem to forgive it.
Still feeling a bit sorry for myself this morning but it is another great day and perhaps my mood will improve as the day goes on. We’ll see.
Well it’s been a big news week. The fallout from the Qantas debacle is still being felt, the Melbourne Cup was run and won in unusually exciting fashion, tragedy struck in Afghanistan with the loss of three more Diggers, the Prime Minister is mixing it with the heavy hitters at the G20 meeting in France, Greece is about to economically implode and leadership rumblings in the Labor Party continue although I think that may have more to do with Murdoch newspapers causing trouble and isn’t anchored in reality.
But of course all this pales into insignifigance alonside the visit to our shores of Kim Kardashian!
Miss Kardashian is apparently a reality TV star who has no discernible talent at anything except, it appears, making a buck.
She was here to promote a line of handbags but has left early to deal with her divorce which she announced before coming to Australia. The crowds that greeted her in Sydney were giddy and the type of reception she received has usually been reserved for rock stars.
One can only be amazed how the standards of being a celebrity have fallen. Kim Kardashian is merely a symptom of a wider malaise in popular culture. We seem to accept mediocrity in nearly everything we do nowadays.
Obviously there is still some fantastic talent around in the film, music and literary worlds and in most other pursuits that people find enjoyable but there doesn’t seem to be real “International” icons of talent and dedication anymore.
You have Beyonce of course and a few others but my mother would barely know any of them. Not like the old days when everyone in the world knew the Beatles, the Stones or the King of Rock and Roll.
There are still a few big name movie stars who can capture the the attention of the wider public but even these sorts of stars are becoming few and far between. The days of movie royalty are certainly over.
Perhaps the death of Michael Jackson also signalled the death of iconic celebrity and immortal talent. I hope I am wrong. The Kim Kardahsians of the world should not be allowed to inherit the earth.
