Well, I’m afraid I have fallen into “bludge” mode this morning!
I had grand plans to walk over to Kambah, retrieve my bike from my parent’s house where my “mechanic”, otherwise known as my father, was inspecting a small problem I have with it. From there I was going to ride it home the long way, giving myself an hour or so to do it thus getting a bit of substantial excercise, relative to my current physical fitness level.
Alas, the best laid plans go awry occasionally.
I got watching youtube clips of Cadel Evans on the Galibier and the Champs Elysees in this year’s Tour de France and time slipped away.
I may go out for a short walk in anycase and pick my bike up later on, but I will be taking it home in the back of my ute in that case.
I do feel a bit tired from the excercise I have done this week so a spell today may do me more good than going out on the bike again.
Bill Long, a famous Australian cycling coach and administrator and promoter with whom I was lucky enough to have quite a bit of contact with in my life as a competitive cyclist once told me that if you were still tired from training the day before then you weren’t recovered well enough and you needed to rest. Bill is unfortunately deceased now but he had trained a Japanese cyclist called Koichi Nakano to nine World Professional Sprint Championships so he had some idea what he was talking about. Just for today I will fall back on Bill’s advice and take a rest day. It will make me feel better about not excercising!
It was actually supposed to be raining today but as I look outside there is blue sky and only scattered cloud. But it is a long day and the rain may roll in before evening and continued showers are forecast across the weekend so we will probably get some precipitation before too long.
A morning of doing nothing will also suit me as the Second Cricket Test between Australia and New Zealand starts in Hobart shortly and anyone who knows me really well knows that the only sport other than cycling that I am really passionate about is cricket.
I don’t mind a bit of Aussie Rules and Rugby League but Union and Soccer leave me cold and I have only a passing interest in Tennis and Golf and most other sports.
So I might have set myself up for the morning, watching the flannelled fools strut their stuff in Hobart although rain and storms are forecast there too but we will find out the situation on the ground in Tasmania soon enough.
Of course, then it is on to work again but being a Friday always seems to make things a little easier knowing a short break is coming up.
Most of the staff are due to go in again on Sunday for Christmas overtime but I have slipped the noose and told them I won’t be in and they can put down whatever they like to explain my absence. I’m afraid I have a life that needs tending to over the weekends and working is never part of my plans on Saturdays or Sundays.
It’s never a problem getting out of Christmas overtime and I don’t expect it to be a problem this year. There are always plenty of people keen to take up the reins for a bit of extra cash on the weekends before Christmas and good luck to them. I can think of better ways to spend a Sunday, extra cash or not.
Work was a bit more sedate yesterday and the only conflict of note was between our anti-management union rep and a Vietnamese lady who is a fan of our new manager Mr Ngo. I do think her attachment has more to do with cultural issues than with his ability as a manager but the conversation got quite animated until Tim shut it down, no doubt worried that he might end up saying something untoward and causing a major incident.
I guess it was a case of pro-Ngo against Ngo-go! Haha. Have a good weekend.
