It’s really sad when a person in a position of influence decides to get on their high horse and rant about things they know nothing about.
Shane Warne, as most people know is probably among the best two or three cricketers ever to play for Australia.
A man of God-given ability on a cricket field who has suddenly decided to use his notoriety to trash cyclists.
I wouldn’t presume to tell Shane Warne that he can’t play cricket in the park, lest an innocent bystander be hit by a stray ball, so I expect him to keep his mouth shut about things he knows nothing about. Namely, cyclists and cycling.
Obviously Mr Warne is one of the intolerant breed who seem to think that the motorcar is king and the rest of us should bow before it.
I’m not exactly sure of the genesis of Mr Warne’s rant but it seems that cyclists have been unkind to him on the roads and he has dragged out the old chesnut, via Twitter, that cyclists should be paying rego…..sigh!
I’m not going to waste my time explaining my opposition to such a law as I would be here all day but again, it’s something you hear from the ignorant masses who think they own the roads whenever the subject of rogue cyclists come up.
It’s totally impractical and would kill cycling as a pastime exactly when we should be trying to encourage it.
Now I am not going to sit here and pretend that all cyclists are above reproach and I can understand how people can get upset when cyclists do the wrong thing, afterall, I drive a motorcar myself everyday and I have seen cyclists do silly things and have only been able to shake my head in disbelief at their actions.
That being said, cyclists who do the wrong thing are very much in the minority in our community and we do all we can to shake the recalcitrants out of their topor when it comes to road safety and do the right thing because their arrogance affects us all.
I think the thing that annoys me the most is the fact that nearly everyday when I go out driving I see fools who shouldn’t be allowed to drive a car gaily flouting the laws and putting other people at risk yet we continue to let these people drive what amounts to a lethal weapon on very little training or instruction. I don’t see Shane Warne mounting any road safety campaign or appearing on adds to try and stop people drink driving. He would probably ask for too much money anyway!
I guess what annoys me the most is that Shane Warne’s comments which have been picked up by today’s daily papers are dangerous.
There are many intolerant drivers out there who only see with tunnel vision who will read Warne’s irresponsible comments and only see red.
I pity the poor cyclists out on the road today, doing the right thing, minding their own businsess who are hassled by hoons in motor cars simply because a has-been sports star had a run in with a bike rider.
I hope one of the many thousand responsible cyclists doing the rounds in Melbourne invite Shane Warne out on a bike ride. A view from the other side of the argument might be beneficial to one so ignorant.
