Linda was up and off to work before 7.00am this morning so rather than do the intelligent thing and stay in bed I got up and ate Weet-Bix, toast, had a cup of tea and a cup of coffee then sat down at the computer.
I was feeling fine but sitting here after breakfast with the sun finally breaking through the cloud layer and streaming in through the large bedroom window I am sitting next to, I am starting to feel sleepy again.
It’s nearly 9am now. It’s funny how time slips away and it is too late to go back to bed.
I actually have a bit of a reason to feel tired as I shook myself out of my torpor of the last few weeks and was quite active yesterday.
I went for a ride on my bike for an hour, mowed the lawn, chopped down a significant amount of foilage in the backyard and went walking with Linda last night after she got home.
The state of my fitness at this time has become apparent to me this morning as I am feeling a little lacklustre and have some minor aches in certain areas due to yesterday’s conservative spurt of energy.
I looked out the backyard this morning and grimaced at the amount of work that is still left to do. I have to clean up the mess I made yesterday and add to it as there are still trees I need to prune and I guess once started you have to keep going. Then I have to take it to the tip.
I have a couple of days to play with before I have to go back to work so I will just potter along.
As I said, I went riding for the first time in about five weeks yesterday.
I haven’t meant to leave it that far between drinks but when it comes to cycling, life seems to get in the way. I suffer from a bit of a lack of inclination with the bike these days.I use to be up and out the door quite early but now I leave later and kid myself that doing an hour or so around the local bike paths is enough.
I also find Canberra to be a little unfriendly to bikes despite it’s self promotion as a bike friendly city.
Canberra, and Australia in general is car crazy and I can’t see that it is ever going to be any other way.
Governments all over the country pay lip service to promoting cycling for health and enviromental reasons but cars continue to clog our roads in ever increasing numbers, drivers seem to think they have the God given right to sole use of the bitumen and rage against cyclists doesn’t seem to be disappearing. The mindset that we have developed in regards to car culture over the past hundred years is set and I can’t see it changing, only getting worse.
So what is a cylist to do?
The bike paths are chock full of pedestrians, people walking dogs, joggers, women with prams, many of whom look at cyclists as an intrusion.
Along with rough surfaces and broken glass at various points on most paths the cycleways too can be a hazard and an inconvenience.
I think that is why cycling, as I have gotten older isn’t as appealing as it use to be although I still enjoy riding my bike.
Perhaps a mountain bike is the way to go but then the local rangers get angry if you don’t stay on designated paths and ride cross country.
Cyclists can’t win.
So today may be a bit of a re-run of yesterday.
I will get off the computer and muddle around with my bike gear and eventually get out for a bit of a buzz around Tuggeranong.
Then it will be out in the yard to clean up which should see me through to the end of the day.
So I have my day mapped out to a degree and it should keep me busy.
I hope everyone else reading this today can find a way to enjoy themselves. Take care.
