Another weekend winds down too quickly and the trumpets and bells that are triggered in my imagination when work approaches will begin to intrude on my tranquility again far too soon.
Nevermind. It’s been a relaxing weekend and work, however boring or monotonous is a neccesary evil that has to be endured. Bring on Monday and the cycle of deja vu that accompanies it.
I went to the Canberra Show on Saturday. It was quite impressive although how families with large numbers of members manage to afford it is beyond me but I suspect Canberra and Australia generally is a more affluent place than I imagine it to be.
It was a hot day Saturday, cloudless with a top temperature of around 31 degrees and I did think about taking a hat, smearing on sunscreen and wearing sunglasses but as I prepared to back out of the driveway it slipped my mind only for the idea to return a minute or so down the road.
Instead of doing the intelligent thing and turning around and getting my sun protection kit hurriedly in order I did the usual “Australian man” routine and figured “she’ll be right”! I’ll be in the pavilions most of the time, the sun won’t get me.
Of course it is always the things one doesn’t think of that gets you into trouble. Linda, being a very sociable and amiable person with a lot of friends, inevitably ran into someone she knows and we spent sometime talking to this person in the full, dazzling blaze of the sun while the Holden stunt team strutted their stuff in the arena, the dust clouds produced by their many manoueveres wafting over the watching crowds in thick clumps yet failing to provide any relief from the cosmic rays.
I could feel myself getting burnt and sweat running down my legs but rather than run for cover I stayed out in heat until our friend departed and we headed for the shade of another pavilion.
I thought I had escaped the worst of the sun but it was not until I got home that I peered in the mirror and saw the blood red tinges reaching across my face and the horrible feeling of sunburn, making your face feel like a layer of rubber is being stretched over it while also being very painful, started to make it’s impression on me.
It could have been worse however and today, while not being completely sunburn free, found me in a lot better shape than I thought I might be.
However the day was full of showers so no sun was to be seen although the day remained very humid and I spent most of it indoors. No strenuous activity, no pressures, just a nice relaxing day, punctuated only by a trip to Kambah to visit my parents.
So that is my weekend. Just the way I like them. I will now get off the computer and try to squeeze some enjoyment out of the last few hours of my Sunday. Take care all.
