The day has dawned bright and clear and it is a sun-streaked start to the morning here in Canberra. Not a cloud to be seen in the sky.
For anyone living in south eastern Australia this is a revelation given the weather that we have had for the last week. I’m sure I have seen that amount of rain before I just can’t remember when.
Still, everywhere a person looks outside, evidence of the recent rain is noticeable. The sodden ground, dirt streaked roads from torrents that have raged across them, debris from trees littering the surrounds. I don’t mind the rain but after the drenching we have had it is a relief that a nice day has come along at last.
Several towns across northern Victoria are in peril from floods. I spent a lot of my youth in that area and prolific amounts of time travelling around the countryside on my bike so it is sad to hear of places like Tungamah, Katamatite and Numurkah having such troubles with flood water.
Wangaratta was on alert but seems to have escaped the worst of it with only low lying flooding apparent. It seems the residents are more upset about the failure of Essendon Football Club to turn up to a pre-season match at the weekend than they are about the prospects of damage from rising rivers!
The great minds at Essendon obviously felt that a two and a half hour bus trip was detrimental to their team and decided to charter a plane to Wangaratta instead, knowing full well that the weather conditions were far from agreeable for flying into country airstrips.
Inevitably, the plane couldn’t land at Wang and had to return to Melbourne, several players suffering motion sickness in the bumpy conditions which buffeted the plane along the way. Eleven thousand people had paid to watch them play St Kilda, who had obviously had no problems getting to Wang and they were gracious enough to have a bit of a run around in an intra-club match for those fans who were keen enough to hang around in the pouring rain. A fiasco and public relations nightmare!
My own health this week has mirrored the conditions and I am having a little bit of trouble seeing off the moderately serious cold I developed last week. My head seems to have cleared but I still have a weeping nose and a deep seated pain deep down in my chest when I cough. It’s not pleasant. I am booked in to see the doctor tomorrow. It is to resupply my asthma medication but maybe I can swing a few days off?
Last week saw plenty of drama in the political and celebrity sphere, keeping the papers full of analysis and comment, not all of it sensible but it seems to be the way with the news media nowadays. Always someone with an agenda to push and not always in the best interests of the country.
I won’t get into a political diatribe on my blog but at times these days I simply avoid television due to the increasing number of ignorant and self interested people who seem to populate news and current affairs shows.
So another week is in prospect and I’m not expecting anything compelling to happen, just the same old routine. Hoping to get over my cold and get out and about in some good weather. Plenty of mowing and washing to be done over the next few days so there will be no shortage of tasks to get into to. I’m sure everyone who has been caught in the deluge of the last week have the same story to tell. Good luck!
