A rare Saturday night home alone for me. I was due to go with Linda to a 40th birthday party for the husband of one of her former work colleagues but I think she sensed that I would rather stay home and let me pike out.
I must say it is a relief. The last four Saturday nights have seen us having guests or being guests elsewhere ourselves and next weekend will be a busy one as we will be in Melbourne so it is nice to have a quiet one at home tonight.
I have been feeling a bit weary from work and we played tennis for a couple of hours this morning which is the most activity I’ve been involved in for a while and I think this has all contributed to my torpor.
So what is there better to do when you have a little bit of time to spare than to blog?!
The working week finished off quite well for me. Our manager had scooted off back home to Sydney leaving us to get on with the job as best we can without his efforts at cajoling us to more efficient practice getting in the way of our enthusiasm.
It’s a funny thing. Our letter cancelling machine has been recording the best figures in the nation for a little while now yet all we get from senior management is that we need to improve. I’m not sure what else we can do when we are already topping the national charts! Perhaps a little bit of support and encouragement would see morale rise and efficiency in other areas improve. Perhaps listening to people who have experience and take on board some of their advice and put it into action would also contribute to a better postal service. I’m not sure those things are taught in AP manager’s school.
It’s easy to criticise of course but sometimes the antics of the powers that be really do leave you frustrated and wondering.
So, last night we were able to have a bit of fun and a laugh without being under too much pressure yet we were able to get the job done in a very proficient manner, our letter per hour score on our cancelling machine being excellent yet again. Is that not the sign of a competent outfit?
We have a few new people in training. Some of them have come from other areas of AP and a couple of them are completely new to the corporation. They will be part time workers once their training is complete.
I must say they look like a good crew. Very keen and hard working. A cut above some of the trainees we get.
One of these new fellows is from London but he is of Barbadian descent so of course he has that dark West Indian skintone. Seems like a nice bloke.
He has a haircut that reminds me of photos I’ve seen of the great West Indian cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers in his prime. I mentioned to our supervisor that our new man looked a little like Gary Sobers. He gazed intently over to where the newbies were working, and asked, “which one?”
I was momentarily dumbstruck as, apart from the fellow I was referring to, the other trainees are of Anglo Saxon and Vietnamese origin!
I asked him if he knew who Gary Sobers was and he assured me that he did so I continued by questioning him again. “Which one do you think?!”
Luckily he then pointed out the right candidate but it did leave me wondering about his cricket knowledge and the attention he actually pays to the conversations he has with me.
Of course I can be accused of occasionally talking rubbish but if I tried to be mature and sensible all the time it would be a dull old place. And a dull old place makes for an interminable day when you are doing a monotonous job.
I haven’t had any dinner and I am in desperate need of a shower so I will sign off for now and make arrangements to do both. It’s been quite a good day and I am expecting another one tomorrow. Hope the same is applicable wherever you are. Ciao.
