Sunday, that most magnificent day of the week is upon us and I am spending it alone at home, my fellow inhabitants of this house flung to the far parts of the city indulging in their passion for soccer.
Sunday, as relaxing and rewarding as it is, always seems, for me at least, to be crouched in a mire of apprehension, a cold sliver of trepidation forever hanging over it, waiting to drop, knowing that tomorrow’s dawn will bring another week of the same old grind, without passion, fun or view of advancement.
I am listening as I write to what sounds like a selection of Gospel favourites and, as the cover states, “Great songs of Inspiration”. Among the collection is the title track, that perennial favourite,”Amazing Grace”, “The Lord is my Sheperd” and “Jerusalem” mixed with some less church like numbers such as “Battle Hymn of the Republic”, “Danny Boy”, and “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, among others.
It would not be everyone’s cup of chai, but I really enjoy it and it seems that the title really does get down deep in my consciousness and makes me feel, if not inspired, then at least a little more affable than I was earlier in the day! Perhaps it is unknowingly giving me strength to face another week at CMC, instilling in me the inspiration to become a model employee, the pride of management and an example to my fellow workers? No, I don’t think so either!
I was out and about yesterday, attending the AFL match at Manuka Oval between the Greater Western Sydney Giants and the Gold Coast Suns, the two newest teams in the national competition. As such there were some bragging rights hanging on the match as neither team had a win to their credit going into the match. The Gold Coast made their debut in the competition last year and notched up three impressive victories, one over my team Richmond but have been on the wrong side of the ledger so far this year.
I suppose the Suns, for the first time in their short lifespan had the pressure on them as, being the slightly older and more experienced team, and with the country’s best player, Gary Ablett jnr running amok in their colours, were expected to win.
Alas, it was not to be and GWS motored ahead in the last quarter and finished off the less than impressive Suns with four straight goals, thus securing an historic victory, much to the delight of the decidedly parochial, pseudo “home crowd”.
I feel I may be a lucky charm to winless football teams just starting out on the long road to fame and glory in our national football competitions.
Many years ago, I think it was 1982, I attended a Canberra Raiders home game at Seiffert oval where they recorded their first ever win against the now defunct Newtown Jets in a very close contest. So history has repeated itself in Canberra, albeit in that “other” code, but I am willing to attend games of any football team looking for a win should they require me. A small fee may apply but I am negotiable.
So that is another couple of days in my less than crowded life done but the weekend isn’t over yet.
My mother is coming around at 3.30pm for a Mother’s Day soiret and we are going to Linda’s eldest daughter’s home for dinner tonight which leaves me a little uncertain as I am not sure exactly what she might conjure up but I am sure she will make her usual exemplary effort and it will be lovely.
“Songs of Inspiration” seem to have concluded and the stereo has flicked onto it’s next CD and Glen Campbell is belching “Galveston” as I write with an earnestness that belies his reputation as a drunk and a junkie. I do however enjoy his music.
So, I better do a last sweep through the house in anticipation for the arrival of our guests and be sure that all is in order. I would hate to be censured by the commander in chief when she gets home for my lack of commitment to the greater good.
Until next time.
