It appears that an 800km wide storm is bearing down on the east coast of the United States with one predicted path spearing smack, bang right through the middle of New York City! I’m no meteorologist of course but the weather gurus are mentioning something about it colliding with a band of cold air thus creating a “superstorm”, the largest recorded according to some.
The logistical nightmare of shutting down New York I’m sure is creating a nightmare for the city authorities and it will be interesting to see how President Obama handles it as a Presidential election is to be fought out next Tuesday. Is it good for Obama or Romney? Only time will tell.
I suppose one could argue that the fact he has to abandon campaigning and start governing again could hurt the President but there is every chance a good response to the crisis could see him riding the heavy waves back to the White House for another four years.
I see Romney has toned down his campaign and the Yanks usually pull together on these things and when the going gets tough. It will be interesting to see how many voters turn out next week in the wake of the hurricane. That too could decide the election.
It is very close according to the polls so Hurricane Sandy has certainly thrown a curve ball at the candidates. Is there a provision for postponing a Presidential election due to a natural disaster?
In any case, I wish both men good luck. Some people get their knickers in a knot when it comes to politics and can’t see the forest for the trees but I do think, looking at it from both sides of the political spectrum, that these are possibly the two best candidates both parties have had for a while. The world awaits.
I get a few page hits from the United States which doesn’t necessarily mean Americans read this blog but if there is anyone tuning in from the east coast of the States, good luck, we are thinking of you and hope you come out the flip side of this storm without too much damage.
As for me I am enjoying yet another magnificent spring day in Canberra although a little rain wouldn’t go astray as the succession of sunny days has started to dry out the front lawn. I think it is going to be a long hot summer here in Australia which I am not looking forward to.
Linda left for work a bit later this morning and so I am running a bit later myself but wanted to get a blog post in and then perhaps get out on my mountain bike for three quarters of an hour or so.
It was my first ride in a long time yesterday, a short jaunt over to Kambah and back, not much more than fifteen kilometres or so but you have to start somewhere. The reason I bought a mountain bike was so I could get back into a little bit of shape without pushing too hard as one does when you start riding a road bike after a long lay off. I always feel an obligation to try and ride a bit harder than I should when I go out on my road bike unfit and I always feel a bit stupid riding uphill at a snail’s pace because of my lack of fitness. Riding the mountain bike I can take it easy and have a bit of fun and once I am rolling along okay again I will switch to my road bike and get a bit serious again. Maybe.
After that the day becomes more regular. Lunch with my father and off to work for another crawl through the tedium but I must admit yesterday wasn’t too bad so I am hoping for a good week that flies by quickly. I am counting the days until Christmas and the five weeks of holidays that follow for me.
So I will sign off and prepare myself to go riding and I hope, wherever you are it is safe and you are well.
 Take care.
