To the Far Side of the World

It’s the final few hours before I board my plane to Sydney where I will spend the evening digesting the carnage which is likely to befall the Labor Party tonight before continuing on to London tomorrow afternoon.I will return in six weeks to a country of a vastly different, although decidedly not better, conservative political persuasion.

If the polls are correct, and there is some doubt if Labor will be defeated as soundly as the odious Murdoch owned newspapers suggest, then it will be a landslide defeat for Kevin Rudd and his government. And that is never good for the country. Australia is ripe for change and that is something which is fine and natural, but to give an incoming government, particularly one of such a conservative bent as one led by Tony Abbott is likely to be,as big a victory as predicted, is bad for the nation.

Of course, Kevin Rudd and his pack of sycophantic supporters have no one to blame for their own demise but themselves. For over three years he undermined a decent and competent Prime Minister in Julia Gillard, a figure who was already facing  outrageous and offensive attacks due to her gender from the most boorish political commentators in the country not to mention a grubby campaign of opposition by the Liberal Party and atrocious conduct from newspaper editors who are told what to write and who to support by that greedy, nasty little man who owns Newscorp. The sooner Rupert Murdoch shuffles off this mortal coil the better the world will be.

Murdoch gave up his right to be an Australian many years ago, preferring the bright lights of the big end of town in the United States, becoming a citizen of that land yet he still likes to keep his finger in the pie and interfere with elections in Australia. And the country is poorer for his influence.

Disunity is death in politics and it will come to pass that the downfall of the Labor government will be contributed to the divisiveness of the last six years, despite it’s economic achievements and social advancements. The darkness looms and the evil empire is set to regain control. What a pity.

Rudd and his cohorts, and you don’t need to look too far to know who they are, have taken the party down a road from where there is no return. Many wonderful members of parliament will lose their seats tonight due to the arrogance and vanity of Rudd and his minions. So be it. Abbott is a poor choice for Prime Minister and the nation will reap what it sows but the blame can be laid squarely at Kevin Rudd’s feet.

For me, for six weeks, it will not matter much. I will turn my gaze away from the Great Southern Land and concentrate on my activities on the far side of the world. I will but pause to observe the victorious march of the new emperor and turn my back and be upon my way and only face reality on my return.

And so this is it. I am on my way. I will try to blog, even if it is just a picture blog, a shot a day. If not, I will regale all with tales of my trip abroad when I return, sunburnt from this new dawn. My laborious life will not be so tedious for a while.

And so farewell and I will greet you all again on the flipside. Have a nice day and don’t forget to vote!
