A While Between Drinks

It’s been a while between drinks for me here on this Blog. I have well and truly broken my self-imposed rule of never letting a week go by without a post as it is now nine days since my last entry. The truth of the matter is that sometimes I don’t get time to write or I simply don’t have the inclination. I can claim both as a reason for my lack of productivity recently.

I’m tired. My job, on paper doesn’t seem so hard but over the last eighteen months there have been changes made to the way we do things which have made the work harder and I feel it every morning when I get out of bed. I’ve got a sore back, a weak shoulder, my ankles creak and I am soaked in a turgid swill of weariness which does not usually dissipate until mid-morning.

It doesn’t make a man very keen to get himself up and going in the mornings, especially now winter has set in although I must say we have hardly seen the worst of what Canberra can offer at this time of year. So, I bide my time, wait for my weary body to give the all clear, then, about ten o’clock as the sun rises higher in the sky and the chill of the night retreats to it’s hidden cave readying itself to re-appear in the morning, I rouse myself and get the blood flowing and face the new day head on.

I have been doing a bit of reading of late. I had been avoiding the hoopla surrounding the “Game of Thrones” books and accompanying television series for some time as I didn’t want to get caught up in the obsession that seems to have gripped a large portion of the world’s population after they have read the novels or watched the show.

My step-daughter is one of these fanatics and implored me for some time to read the first book and I resisted all her entreaties until recently when I downloaded “Game of Thrones” onto my kindle. It was the worst thing I could have done as I am now hooked on the series although it drives me crazy.

The characters do stupid things and get themselves killed or maimed and I am not really enamored with the storyline. But the writing is good if not a bit too descriptive for my taste and the characters excellent although one doesn’t want to get too attached to any of them; George RR Martin, the author of the series doesn’t mind killing off major players in a sudden, shocking purge.

I have read that some of the storyline is based on the War of the Roses, the epic civil war which erupted in England in the 15th century between the Houses of York and Lancaster and the Stark and Lannister families certainly bear a passing resemblance to those great houses of bygone times. One can’t help but think that Edward III of England or his great grandson, Henry V may have cleaned this lot up in no time had they been given their head on Westoros. I have been sucked in and another three novels await!

But for now, ten o’clock approaches and I will rouse myself for the day and be a more proactive and productive. It looks like it may be a serviceable day, not bitingly cold as is the fashion this time of year.

So, in medieval fashion I will bid you all adieu, happy days, safe travels and hopefully I will have more important things to say next time we meet.
