Life rolls on as does the seemingly interminable election campaign here in Australia. God, did PM Turnbull really have to make it a nine week crawl until we vote? I’m sure there is method to his madness. He probably thinks two months gives him plenty of time to roast the opposition. Former PM Keating once told his own opposite number John Hewson many years ago, “I want to do you slowly mate” and surely the current incumbent of the Prime Ministership is thinking along the same lines. I imagine he fancies himself as a superior campaigner than the dull and boring Mr Shorten although the polls don’t appear to be swinging in his direction as we pass the halfway point. Only halfway?!! I don’t need anymore dreariness in my life. Work is bad enough!
It could be worse. We could be voting for the President in the United States and lest you get the wrong impression because Hillary Clinton just seized the Democratic Party’s nomination, there is still five months until they actually hold a general election for the top job! Mrs Clinton of course has made history by becoming the first woman from either major party in the States to be nominated to run for President. She is highly qualified to be President although she carries a lot of baggage in her saddle bags. Is there enough weight to drag her down to defeat in November? Maybe. But when the alternative is Donald Trump then she must have a chance of victory.
Donald Trump. I am not going to insult the vast numbers of Americans who have voted for him in the primaries by asking “what the hell are you thinking?!!” but surely there are better candidates in the Republican Party than he? I like my political leaders to be a little more inspiring, a little less verbose and perhaps a little more gentlemanly than Mr Trump seems to be. Then again, America has survived poor Presidents before and it will survive President Trump if he is elected. Maybe he will surprise. And anyway, who is an Australian to talk? We did vote Tony Abbott in as Prime Minister just three short years ago. At least his party saw the light!
It’s not over for us in the ACT after the Federal election either. We have local elections for our own “Toy-town” parliament in October. The fun just never ends! Another uninspiring contest between empty suits. The Labor government has ruled forever-or so it seems and the Territory could probably do with another perspective. Unfortunately the Liberal opposition don’t appear to have much vision. Not surprising really. If you think the incumbents have sold the farm wait until the other mob get in!
And so the train continues to cross the wasteland of life with the odd, intermittent stop at stations of excitement. I can’t wait to get off.
Have a nice day.
