Summer Sun and Shifting Calendars

Boy, January has slipped away quickly and February is upon us already. The world keeps turning and those seconds turn to minutes, turn to hours, days, weeks…..so on. Life seems to move along slowly but surely but then you look at the date and you are starting to burn another calendar. I am a bit of a Facebook adherent and they now have a “memories” section which reminds you of posts you have made on corresponding days in years gone by and it makes you realise that time slips by more quickly than you think it does. Trips and holidays, memories of which seem like they were only made yesterday are retreating in the distance at a rapid pace. 2 years, 3 years ago….scary.

So I am making my first post for 2019, as late as it is and I wish you all “Happy New Year” and I hope you are making a fair fist of it already. I have been working…..working around the house, ticking off jobs on the list of things to do which Linda has so graciously composed for me. I think I could be here for two years such is the number of chores I need to attend to. Painting, gardening, landscaping, cleaning….yes, I am not employed at the moment but at times I seem to working as hard as ever. And the weather hasn’t helped. It’s been a stinker this southern summer.

It has always been hot in an Australian summer but over the last few years the temperatures in January have been extreme. I can’t remember days on end of temperatures near 40 degrees celsius and here in Canberra it has been as hot as anywhere. Australia was the hottest place on earth for several days early in the year and I see New Zealand is copping an Australian like heatwave at the moment. Crazy.

If scientists are right about global warming, and record breaking temperatures we are starting to endure every summer seem to lend some credence to their diagnosis, it will have huge impacts on this nation. Agriculture will be affected, our cultural life, based on sea, sun and the outdoors will be dislocated and even things like transport, infrastructure and housing will all have to be looked at. But, it seems some don’t believe as is their right but…. things look grim to me if we don’t have a crack at trying to change the way we do things. That being said I am not here to promote any opinion of mine. Do as you will and believe what you want to believe. I am not here to argue.

So, life goes on, that calendar keeps dropping off days and history keeps it’s inexorable pace towards infinity. “Strange Notations from a Laborious Life” endures and will be active throughout 2019. I hope I will have something relevant to say and invite you all to contribute.

I am off to find my list….I think mowing the lawn is on top of the agenda today. At least it is cool and overcast, the first sign of weakness the summer has shown this year, so my workday will be much more pleasant.

Have a great day.
