Pickin’ and a Packin’

I’m back in the workforce and whilst it is great to be earning some cash again, the method in which I am doing it is medieval to say the least. Yes, I’m picking and packing product off a conveyer belt….all day! I thought sorting mail was mundane, well, I didn’t know which way was up! I’m working as a casual for a cosmetics company and I am standing on what amounts to an assembly line scanning labels and filling boxes. It’s an alien environment with lots of strangers who decline to talk and it’s hard work. I’ve done some graft that has left me shattered but this is up there with it. And, being a casual, the regular staff really don’t care much for us. I almost convinced myself to ring my old boss and ask for my job back. Almost.

Ah…to be back in Bruges, sigh.

Now don’t worry about me too much. I am not standing for this for too long. I couldn’t if I wanted to, my body and mind wouldn’t let me. I have managed to wrangle it so I am working every second day; I would slit my wrists if I had to front up five in a row! It’s a factory environment too which doesn’t sit well. No natural light, very forbidding with a real hard nosed supervisor who has been very unpleasant to say the least. I guess reality has bitten. The big upside is that I am earning a load more than I ever have before. Casual work has it’s attractions.

I have applied for a couple of jobs and I continue to look. I am not too fussy but picking and packing will only last me so long. First job offer and I am gone! At least it’s keeping the wolves from the door.

So, that is my life at the moment. In some what of a holding pattern as far as work is concerned but I am hopeful of better days ahead. I am doing some study to try and upskill and I am confident things will work out.

I’ve had the day off today but I am off picking and packing again tomorrow. Watching the clock slowly count down till the end of the day. Another trial in this laborious life.

Until next time.
