I had to visit a doctor for the first time in four years last week. As I am getting older, I often have someone suggest to me that I should go and get a check up but as I am rarely ill I don’t see the point. However, I certainly was in need of some medical assistance and had to bite the bullet and find a doctor.
I have been frequenting the same medical practice for several years and as you would expect there has been a turnover of staff along the way so I have seen a few different GP’s over that time but I like to go to a single practitioner who makes me comfortable. Obviously that is hard when you don’t go very often but scrolling through the doctors list on the practice website I spied the fellow who I had last seen. Unfortunately when he first appeared at the practice a number of years ago he brought several hundred patients with him from his previous job thus making him extremely difficult to see quickly. He is obviously very good but I have wondered why anyone would wait three weeks to see him. You wouldn’t want to be dying!
Unfortunately the issue at hand required some immediate attention so I fixed my sites on a fairly recent addition to the practice, a young female doctor who I thought might be worth a go. Now before I go any further I will say she was very thorough and competent and it was nice to see a doctor who was chirpy and positive although on a follow up visit this week I did think I picked up a hint of surprise when all of my tests came back with good results.
Obviously a slight problem as I have reported can’t be left undiagnosed despite my good results so I have now had a scan, my first time in the big metal ring, and I am still giving a few samples and the problem seems to be a little clearer now. Nothing too much to worry about but I will need to see a specialist and I feel an invasive procedure may be in the offing. Fun times ahead.
I have now crept over the fifty years of age mark, in fact I’m fifty one and I often feel exactly the same as I did twenty years ago in fact I feel better at times and sometimes have to remind myself that I am not as young as I feel. Yes, a few niggles are creeping in where none existed previously and I get tired more easily but I don’t seem to get sick as often. I am more resilient, or so I think. My test results were very good, in fact the doctor called them “perfect” so I am travelling along okay despite this little hiccup.
So, I can only see where this medical road will lead me. I will see the specialist in the coming weeks so everything will shake out after that. It’s been a long time since I have had to deal with this sort of thing and although I am quite relaxed about it I could certainly have done without the hassle.
Onwards and upwards and I will post again soon.
