Looking Out for Curve Balls

Life throws plenty of curveballs at you-I have certainly had my share of that over the past 18 months or so and the hits just keep on coming!

When Linda was diagnosed with stage 4 metastasized breast cancer in the middle of 2022, the one thing her GP emphasized was: don’t get covid 19! After three years of ducking and weaving the inevitable finally happened and Linda was felled by the Corona virus last week.

A debilitating headache and non-stop vomiting saw her visit emergency last Monday week and she was later transferred to a ward with one other person especially reserved for covid patients. A requirement for this ward is that you must suit up with protective equipment when you go in and zip it off when you go out. Face masks, face shields, gloves and gowns make it a very uncomfortable experience especially when you are unable to eat or drink while you are in the room. You cannot wander around outside and even the nurses must suit up and strip off in the course of administering their duties to their covid patients which must get monotonous.

After a couple of days of worry, illness, visits from oncologists and juggling of medications, Linda finally felt well enough to be discharged but the effects are still being felt by her. She cannot take her chemotherapy tablets for a couple of weeks yet and she is drowning in daily anti-viral medications. It’s like a casualty clearing station in this house!

The only fortunate thing to come from the whole experience is that it was a relatively mild dose of covid that Linda received. One can only imagine complications that may have arisen if she was downed with a more serious dose. We are both up to date with our vaccinations and I have no doubt her four covid shots kept the worst of possible side effects at bay.

Linda is still feeling drained and as she described it, a little “heavy” and is actually feeling a little sore in the head this morning, no doubt due to the lingering effect of the virus. The worries don’t abate!

As for me well I have dodged the lurgy yet again and covid is yet to lay its grubby paws on me but I take nothing for granted.

So, life has again taken aim at us and given us plenty to think about and contemplate. It’s those curveballs of life that are the biggest worry-the ones you don’t see coming that can fell you without any notice. We keep looking for them like space scientists looking for earth killing meteors and hope like them that nothing slips under our radar.

Onwards and upwards-there is no other way to go and hopefully life will be a little kinder to us in the weeks and months to come.

Till next time.
