The Blink of an Eye

I have always found time to be an enigma. Days drag, yet years seem to go by in the blink of an eye. It’s a year since Linda was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and, despite the seriousness of her affliction, we have found ourselves twelve months down the track with all going well-which is relative I suppose.

This time last year Linda was basically given a prognosis of two years to live which was a sobering moment for us and all who know and love her. However, here we are and if anything, her situation has improved. The treatment, although invasive has been working better than even her oncologists thought it might. Yes, we are living with uncertainty regarding her health with an appreciation that a setback could happen and throw our world into despair but, we are living a good life and the worries of the future can wait for now.

Linda’s scans and blood tests were checked by an oncologist yesterday and despite a slight progression in her bone cancer and Linda’s self-deprecating black humour, he was very pleased and gave the impression that he wasn’t expecting her to shuffle of this mortal coil anytime soon. She now has a week off her chemotherapy treatment which she always looks forward to. Life goes on.

As for me, the recurring bouts of gout which I have been suffering seem to have subsided except for the occasional sharp pain in the foot which last only a second or two at a time and I am no longer restricted. Hopefully I can keep it under control from here.

The major incident of note since my last entry is a car accident I had which wrote off Linda’s zippy little Corolla. Proceeding through a roundabout in far flung Conder on my way to picking up Nathan, a gentleman in a hired refrigeration van decided that give way signs are for numpties and demolition derbies more interesting and drove straight into me. It was quite a serious crash and realistically I was lucky not to suffer any injury apart from a very minor pin prick of a cut on my arm, presumably caused by flying glass. The dashboard of the car exploded and much to my chagrin the culprit drove off although we managed to track him down later. I presume he was on his phone and simply drove through the roundabout completely oblivious to his responsibilities. The annoying part is that he is no doubt out there again as I write, causing danger to all who have the misfortune to cross his path. Please all, be careful out there.

Of course, the result of this is that we have a new car, a Mazda CX-5 which is a bit of beast in comparison to the old Corolla and I am still getting use to it. I have always been quite confident as a driver, but I must say an accident like that has shaken me up a little and I have been driving very cautiously since-there are a lot of idiots in motor cars out there.

So, that’s about all I have to report. Linda tracking well, new car going well. Life-going well. May it long continue.
